residential child care

It was our aim when setting up Charis to put the heart into children's homes. We strongly believe that children's homes should feel as close as possible to real homes for the children living in them. Secondly, the care they receive should enable the children to feel loved, nurtured, supported, and valued as unique individuals with innate potential.

We have to this end developed a relationship-based model of practice that we feel most holistically meets these aims. Our model of residential care aims to provide safe, nurturing, and therapeutic environments for children who have had adverse life experiences including abuse and neglect who need a stable place to heal, grow, and thrive

Practice approach

We provide a relationship-based model of care that integrates two evidence-based approaches, trauma informed practice and social pedagogy as a way of engaging with children to build deeper more authentic relationships that support, healing, growth, and realisation of potential.
We have combined these two complementary approaches to provide a holistic approach that addresses the past, whilst also being forward-looking; one focuses directly on supporting recovery from the negative impacts of adverse life experiences; and the other on learning and the development of potential, skills and resources to promote future wellbeing and success.
Trauma Informed Practice (TIP) The trauma-informed approach provides a framework for understanding the impact of trauma on children's development, and behaviour and involves the use of PACE, which is a way of communicating to build attachments and to support children to make sense of complex feelings, thoughts, and behaviours related to past experiences.
Social Pedagogy Social pedagogy provides a multi-disciplinary strengths-based approach focused on learning, relationships, empowerment, and well-being. The key premise being that there is innate potential inside every person that can be developed and strengthened, through authentic relationships and shared activities.
Overall brilliant experience have some of my best memories there. Wish I was still there sometimes

people

Our people are the heart of our organisation. We want the very best people who are committed to developing authentic relationships with the most vulnerable children. We recruit and train diverse and skilled staff whose values match ours. We provide a bespoke development program and offer good support and remuneration so we can attract and retain great staff.

We recognise that supportive relationships and networks are pivotal to children's well-being and happiness both now and in the future. This includes both relationships with carers within the home and their wider networks beyond. The practice approaches used in the home support carers to develop strong relationships with young people that firstly and most importantly help children feel loved, nurtured and connected, second help them develop the security, resilience, tools, and networks to manage and navigate life challenges successfully.

place

We create spaces that feel like home. We aim to promote health and well-being through purposeful and thoughtfully planned physical environments, day-to-day living arrangements, and activities.

We focus on using nature, creativity, day-to-day activities, and the home environment as means of connection, personal expression, mood regulation, learning, and enjoyment.

We want our homes to be beautiful environments for our children to live and grow up in as well as for our carers to spend time in with them.

purpose

We emphasise supporting children to discover their innate potential. We work closely with learning providers and other support services to allow every child to recognise and achieve their ambitions. A holistic education is at the top of our list of priorities. We use day-to-day living opportunities and activities purposefully to build relationships and promote learning and development of new interests, as well as supporting their formal education .

Staff Expertise

Our team is made up of experienced, committed and compassionate professionals with extensive experience in therapeutic care. They undergo continuous training to stay updated on our relationship-based approaches ensuring the highest quality of care for every child.
